Riverside Cemetery, established in 1885, is a city park that has over 14000 internments with approximately 9000 headstones. It is home to Writers, Lawyers, Artists, Architects, Senators, Governors, Military (Civil thru Iraq Wars), Generals. Riverside Cemetery is also a beautiful park with beautiful monuments, mausoleums and gorgeous landscaping where residents come to picnic, walk, jog and enjoy the surrounding grounds.
Our tours are true stories of those interred in Riverside Cemetery having major impact on the history of Asheville, influential women in Asheville, Biltmore Estate connections, Civil War, Architects, mausoleums, meaning of stone designs, or a mix of all. We can also customize tours to meet your interest. Tours are walking tours with a range of easy walking to more difficult walking up and down the hills or in your personal car.
Gary is a life long resident of Asheville with a passion for sharing Asheville History through those interred at Riverside Cemetery. Gary has studied for a decade learning stories on famous and not so famous internments of Riverside. He also tours Biltmore Estate grounds.
After a career in health care and working at Biltmore Estate, Sharon became interested in Asheville History. She has studied those interred in Riverside Cemetery several years and is eager to share the fun and interesting stories.
This tour is easier walking staying close to the top of the hill while still covering many of the well known and fun stories such as Thomas Wolfe, O, Henry, Zebulon Vance and Vadim Bora
Mr Vanderbilt brought hundreds of workers to Asheville to design and build the Biltmore House. Many who had an impact on the establishment and construction are interred in Riverside Cemetery. A few are Chauncey Beadle, Richard Sharpe Smith, S I Bean and J C Lipe.
This tour covers the 16 mausoleums and those interred in them. A few are: Franklin Terry (VP of GE), Karl Von Ruck (Dr of TB), John Baker (Inventor), Ken Noland (Artist), Burnham Colburn (Mineral Collection)
Women interred in Riverside Cemetery have a history in Medical, Political , Military, Social and fun stories.
Confiderate and Union Soldiers are interred in Riverside Cemetery ranging for Brigader Generals to Private’s.
